The Missing Piece: How to Build a Brand That Feels Like You
Can we have a heart-to-heart about something that’s been on my mind?
I see so many women in business smart, capable, passionate women doing everything right. They’re showing up, following all the strategies, posting consistently, and checking every box on the “How to Build a Successful Business” checklist.
And yet… something still feels off.
Because even though they’re doing all the “right” things, they’re blending in. Their content sounds like everyone else’s. Their offers feel fine, but not aligned. And they’re exhausted trying to keep up with an endless cycle of proving themselves instead of owning who they already are.
And I get it because I was there too.
I used to believe that if I just followed the formulas and stuck to what I knew worked, I’d get the results I wanted. And for a while, that worked kind of. But I wasn’t building a business that felt like me. I was building something that looked successful on the outside but didn’t light me up on the inside.
So if you’ve been feeling like something is missing in your business, maybe it’s not about working harder or trying to prove yourself. Maybe it’s about shifting your focus.
Maybe it’s time to stop being the solution to a problem and start being the missing piece people didn’t even realize they needed.
Let’s talk about how to do that.
One of the biggest shifts I made in my business was getting crystal clear on what I actually value. Not what I thought I should value, but what really mattered to me.
For me, it’s freedom. Freedom of time, freedom to create, freedom to build my business in a way that doesn’t feel like a constant hustle.
And because I know that, I make decisions differently. I don’t say yes to things that pull me away from the kind of life I want. I don’t chase trends that don’t align with how I actually want to show up. And when I talk about business, I don’t just teach how to grow I show why doing it in a way that supports your actual life matters.
So what about you? What do you value? What’s the thing that, if it’s missing, makes your business feel wrong? Because when you get clear on that, everything else starts to align.
We all have stories moments that shaped us, lessons we had to learn the hard way, struggles that made us stronger. But so many entrepreneurs hide those stories because they think people just want the “how-to” steps.
I’m telling you right now that’s not true.
People don’t just want a solution. They want to feel seen. They want to connect. They want to know why you do what you do, not just what you do.
So think about your own story. What were the pivotal moments that changed everything for you? What challenges did you face that your audience is probably facing right now? What’s the transformation you’ve gone through that they want for themselves?
For me, one of my biggest transformations was realizing I didn’t have to hustle myself into the ground to be successful. That I could build a business that worked for me instead of working myself into burnout. And once I started sharing that—not just business tips, but my actual journey everything changed.
Because people don’t just buy into your knowledge. They buy into you.
Here’s something no one talks about when you market yourself as the solution to a problem, you’re automatically putting yourself in a position where people are comparing you to every other “solution” out there.
And that’s exhausting.
But when you shift from being a “solution” to being the missing piece the thing they didn’t even know they needed until they saw it you stop competing.
Think about it how many people are out there teaching business strategy? Marketing? Content creation? A lot. But the people who stand out? They’re not just solving problems. They’re filling a gap no one else is filling.
For me, that gap was teaching female entrepreneurs how to build businesses that actually align with their lives without the constant hustle and burnout.
So instead of trying to prove why I’m the best solution, I started talking about the deeper transformation what happens when you stop winging it, stop working against yourself, and start running your business in a way that feels good.
And that’s what I want you to think about. What’s the gap you’re filling? What’s the thing that only you bring to the table? Because when you figure that out, you don’t have to prove yourself anymore. You are the thing they’ve been looking for.
Once you know your values, your story, and your missing piece, the next step is making sure people actually hear it.
And that means not just posting on one platform and hoping for the best.
Create a signature series—something that ties back to your message in different ways. Talk about it in your Instagram Stories, in Reels, in emails, on your podcast, in blog posts. If you want people to connect with your brand, they need to see it in multiple places, in multiple formats.
Because here’s the truth people aren’t just buying what you do. They’re buying into the way you see things. The way you approach the transformation they want.
So make sure they actually get to experience that.
If you’ve been feeling stuck in your business, like you’re constantly trying to prove yourself, or like you’re blending in with every other person doing what you do—I need you to hear this.
You already have everything you need to stand out. It’s in your values. It’s in your story. It’s in the unique way you see the world.
You don’t have to be louder. You don’t have to work harder. You just have to start showing up as you.
So here’s my challenge for you: Take a few minutes today and answer these questions—
Then, take that and start showing up with that energy. Your audience doesn’t need another generic solution. They need you.
And if you want to dive deeper into this, DM me on Instagram @boisedigitalcollective and tell me what gap you’re filling I’d love to hear it.
Or listen to EPISODE 12 of my podcast, Healthy Business Habits with Heather, where we talk about this Blog Post in depth.
Alright, that’s it for today. Keep showing up, keep owning your story, and I’ll talk to you soon. 💛
