Building Confidence by Measuring Backward: How to See Your Own Progress

Confidence isn’t something you’re born with it’s something you build.

But let’s be real for a second. If you’re like most people, you probably spend more time thinking about how far you stillhave to go rather than how far you’ve already come. And when you do that? It’s easy to feel stuck, frustrated, and like you’re not making progress fast enough.

That’s why one of the best ways to build confidence isn’t by looking forward—it’s by measuring backward.

Why You’re Probably Measuring the Wrong Way

Most of us are wired to measure success by looking ahead. We set goals, chase milestones, and tell ourselves I’ll feel confident when I reach [insert big goal here]. But the problem with always looking forward is that progress can feel slow, and the gap between where you are and where you want to be never goes away.

Even when you do hit a goal, you’re already focused on the next one. You barely take a second to acknowledge what you’ve accomplished before setting an even bigger target.

And that’s where the self-doubt creeps in.

Because when you’re always measuring against the future, you’re always falling short.

The Confidence Hack: Measuring Backward Instead

Imagine if, instead of constantly looking at how far you have to go, you looked back at where you started.

Where were you six months ago? A year ago? Three years ago?

Think about your first attempt at something your first sale, your first post, your first video, your first anything. Now compare it to where you are today.

See the difference? That’s progress. That’s proof that you’re growing, evolving, and improving even if it doesn’t always feel like it.

Confidence isn’t about knowing you’ll succeed every time. It’s about trusting yourself because you’ve already overcome challenges before. And when you take a moment to reflect on what you’ve already accomplished, it fuels your imagination to try new things because now you have proof that you can.

How to Start Measuring Backward Today

If you’re feeling stuck, doubtful, or like you’re not where you “should” be (side note: there is no should), I want you to try this:

1️⃣ Write down three things you’ve accomplished in the past six months—big or small. What are you doing today that past-you would be so proud of?

2️⃣ Look back at an old version of your work. Scroll back on your Instagram feed, look at old emails, rewatch your first video, or find the first offer you ever put out into the world. See how much you’ve grown?

3️⃣ Acknowledge the lessons learned. Confidence isn’t just about wins it’s also about how you’ve handled challenges. What hard thing did you navigate in the past year? How did you get through it?

4️⃣ Use your progress to fuel your next move. If you’ve improved this much already, what else is possible? What’s one thing you haven’t tried yet because you’ve been waiting to feel ready?

Confidence Comes from Proof, Not Perfection

No one feels confident before they start something new. Confidence isn’t a prerequisite it’s a byproduct of doing the thing anyway. And the best way to remind yourself that you can is by looking back at all the times you already have.

So before you spend another second thinking about how far you have left to go, take a moment to appreciate how far you’ve already come.

You’re further than you think. You’re more capable than you realize. And if past-you could see you now? She’d be so proud.
